Literacy
Play provides a great way for children to develop early literacy skills. Board games, card games and sticker books encourage children to talk, listen, follow simple instructions and share their ideas. Sticker books also encourage children to look closely at pictures, recognise familiar objects and discuss what they can see, while choosing and placing stickers gives children opportunities to make choices and talk about their actions. These activities help children build vocabulary, confidence and communication skills through play.
Games and sticker books can also introduce children to letters, words, pictures and symbols. Children may recognise familiar words or letters on game cards, match pictures and symbols, or talk about the characters and objects in a sticker book. Sharing these activities with an adult or other children creates opportunities for conversation, questioning and storytelling, helping children develop an interest in books, print and language while learning through play.
As children progress into Key stage 1 and key stage 2 they will be able to read the words on card games practicing their phonics and as time progresses demonstrate a better comprehension and ability to engage with activity books more independently.
