Physical development

The EYFS Physical Development area focuses on children developing their movement, coordination, control and fine motor skills, which support their independence in everyday activities. Fine motor skills can be developed through a range of play-based activities.

Sticker books encourage children to use their fingers to peel and place stickers accurately. Construction toys help develop finger strength, hand-eye coordination and the ability to manipulate small pieces. Board games  encourage children to pick up, hold and move cards or dice developing coordination and control. These activities are fun but they also help children build the skills they will need for tasks such as writing, drawing, fastening clothing and using tools.

As children progress through Key stage 1 and 2 in primary school the amount of time they spend writing increases gradually. You can support your child by continuing to develop their fine motor control. The use of construction toys such as K'nex increase finger strength helping to build that stamina for longer form writing in school. Sticker books continue to develop that pencil strength while also bringing in an element of hand eye coordination. As children progress though primary the play element becomes less apparent in an educational setting but it can most definitely still be used at home to support the skills they need in a easy and fun way.
